How often should you post on social media? A realistic answer

6 September 2026 · 5 min read

Search 'how often should I post on social media' and you'll get a hundred confident, contradictory answers — three times a day here, once a week there. The honest answer is less exciting and far more useful: post as often as you can sustain, consistently, and no more.

Why consistency beats frequency

Platforms reward accounts that show up regularly, and audiences trust them. An account that posts three times a week, every week, for a year will almost always outperform one that posts daily for a fortnight and then goes silent. Bursts followed by gaps are worse than a steady, modest cadence — you lose momentum every time you stop, and the algorithm notices.

A rough starting point (not a rule)

If you need numbers to begin with, these are reasonable starting cadences — treat them as a floor you can build on, not a target to hit at any cost:

  • Instagram & Facebook: 3–5 posts a week, plus stories if you have them.
  • LinkedIn: 2–4 posts a week — quality and insight matter more than volume here.
  • TikTok: this one genuinely rewards frequency, so more is better if you can keep it up.
  • X: higher volume suits the platform, but only if you have something to say.

Notice these are ranges, and small ones. Better to commit to the low end and never miss than to aim high and collapse.

How to find your cadence

  1. 1Start with the number you're certain you can hit every week — even if it's two.
  2. 2Hold it for a month without missing. Consistency first.
  3. 3Only then add more, one post at a time, and only if the quality holds.

The trick that makes any cadence sustainable

The reason people can't keep up isn't the number — it's writing each post on the day. Batch instead: plan and create a week (or more) in one sitting, then schedule it to publish automatically. Suddenly 'five posts a week' isn't five daily scrambles; it's one focused session. That's the difference between a cadence that lasts and one that doesn't.
