How to price social media management services
2 September 2026 · 7 min read
Pricing is the question every freelancer and new agency agonises over, because there's no published rate card and getting it wrong hurts either way — too high and you lose the client, too low and you resent the work. Here's how to think about it clearly.
The three common pricing models
- Monthly retainer — a fixed fee for a defined scope each month. The most common, and the easiest for a client to budget.
- Per-deliverable — priced by output (e.g. X posts a month). Clear, but can trap you into volume over value.
- Hourly — simple to start with, but it punishes you for getting faster and caps your income at your hours.
Most established managers land on a monthly retainer, because it aligns you with the client's results rather than your hours.
What actually drives the price
- Scope — number of platforms, posts, and whether you also do strategy, community management and reporting.
- Content creation — writing captions is one thing; shooting and editing video is another, and should cost more.
- The client's size and stakes — a national brand's social carries more risk and value than a local café's.
- Your experience — results and a portfolio justify higher rates; charge for the outcome, not the time.
Don't underprice yourself into burnout
The classic mistake is quoting a low retainer, then quietly doing far more than the scope to keep the client happy — until the account is unprofitable and you're exhausted. Define the scope in writing, price it so the account is worth your time, and treat extra work as extra billing. A client who won't pay a sustainable rate isn't a client you want.
Protect your margin with efficiency
Your profit on a retainer is the gap between the price and the hours it takes you. The faster you can produce on-brand content and schedule it, the more clients you can carry at the same quality. Optimate exists to widen that gap — a brand kit per client, AI that writes in each client's voice, one calendar for everything, and white-label reports — from £59/month for three clients.
