How to write social media captions that get engagement

7 September 2026 · 6 min read

The image or video stops the scroll, but the caption is what turns a passing view into a like, a comment, a save or a click. Most captions waste their most valuable asset — the first line — on a warm-up nobody reads. Here's a framework that doesn't.

The three-part caption

Almost every high-performing caption does three things, in order:

  1. 1Hook — the first line earns the second. Lead with the interesting bit, a bold claim, a question, or the result. Never with 'So today I wanted to talk about…'.
  2. 2Value — deliver on the hook. Teach one thing, tell one story, or make one point. One is the operative word.
  3. 3Call to action — tell people what to do next: comment, save, share, click, follow. A post with no ask usually gets no action.

Write the first line like it's the only line

On most platforms the caption is truncated after a line or two behind a 'more' link. That first line is doing the same job as an email subject line: earn the click. If it doesn't make someone want to tap 'more', the rest of your caption doesn't exist.

Match the caption to the platform

  • Instagram & Facebook: a strong first line, then room to tell a story if it earns it.
  • LinkedIn: lead with a hook, then short paragraphs and white space — walls of text die here.
  • X: one sharp idea; the platform punishes padding.
  • TikTok & Reels: the caption supports the video — keep it short and let the hook live in the first seconds of footage.

Common mistakes that kill a caption

  • Burying the point under a throat-clearing intro.
  • Trying to say five things — pick one.
  • No call to action, so nobody engages.
  • Sounding like a brand instead of a person — write how you'd actually speak.
