9 social media mistakes small businesses make (and how to fix them)
5 August 2026 · 6 min read
After you've seen enough small-business social media accounts, the same mistakes come up again and again. The encouraging part is that they're all fixable, and fixing even two or three of them usually turns things around. Here are the nine most common.
1. Posting inconsistently
Two weeks on, a month off. This is the number-one killer, because both the algorithm and your audience reward showing up. Fix it by batching content and scheduling ahead, so a busy week doesn't mean a silent feed.
2. Being on too many platforms
Spreading yourself across five channels means doing all of them badly. Pick the one or two where your customers actually are and do those well. You can add more later.
3. Only ever selling
A feed that's all promotions trains people to ignore you. Aim for roughly one promotional post in five; the rest should help, entertain or show the human side of the business.
4. Talking about yourself, not the customer
'We're excited to announce…' is about you. 'Here's how to fix the thing that's frustrating you' is about them. The second gets read. Lead with what the reader gets.
5. No call to action
A post that doesn't tell people what to do next usually gets nothing back. End with one clear action — follow, save, comment, or click — matched to the post.
6. Inconsistent visuals
Different fonts, drifting colours, a logo that comes and goes. It reads as amateur. Set two or three brand colours, two fonts and a fixed logo placement, and hold to them on every graphic.
7. Ignoring comments and messages
Social media is social. Leaving comments and DMs unanswered wastes the interest you worked to create — and unanswered questions are lost sales. Reply, even briefly, and reply promptly.
8. Chasing followers instead of customers
A big follower count that never buys is a vanity number. A small, engaged audience of the right people is worth far more. Measure saves, clicks, DMs and enquiries — the things that lead to money — not just follows.
9. Giving up too soon
Social media compounds slowly; most people quit in the flat part of the curve, right before it pays off. Commit to a realistic cadence for a few months before you judge whether it's working.
