How to build a social media strategy for a small business (in 5 steps)

7 September 2026 · 6 min read

'Social media strategy' sounds like something that needs a consultant and a 30-page deck. For a small business it doesn't — it needs five clear decisions, written down, that stop you posting randomly and hoping. Here they are.

Step 1: Decide what it's for

Pick one primary goal: awareness (more people know you exist), engagement (a community that trusts you), or traffic and sales. All three are valid, but they lead to different content — so choose the one that matters most right now, and let it steer the rest.

Step 2: Know who you're talking to

Write a sentence describing your ideal customer and what they care about. Everything you post is for them, not for you and not for everyone. This one sentence quietly answers most 'should I post this?' questions.

Step 3: Choose one or two platforms

Go where your customers already are and where you can realistically post. Two platforms done consistently beats five done badly. You can add more once the first two run themselves.

Step 4: Set your content pillars

Pick three to five recurring themes — for a café it might be dishes, the team, offers, and local life. Pillars turn the daily 'what do I post?' into the far easier 'which pillar today?', and they keep your feed coherent instead of random.

Step 5: Set a cadence and measure it

Decide how often you'll post — start with what you can sustain — and pick one or two metrics that map to your goal (from Step 1). Review them monthly, do more of what works, drop what doesn't. That's the whole strategy: five decisions and a monthly look.
