Which social media platforms should your business actually be on?

4 September 2026 · 6 min read

The pressure to be on every platform is intense and almost always wrong. Spreading yourself across five networks you can't keep up with produces five neglected accounts. One or two, done consistently, beats that every time. The question isn't 'which platforms exist?' — it's 'where is my audience, and what can I actually sustain?'

Start with two questions

  • Where does my audience already spend time? Go where they are, not where you'd like them to be.
  • What content can I realistically make? Video-heavy platforms need video; if you can't make it, don't force it.

A quick guide to who each platform suits

Rough generalisations — your audience is the real answer, but this is a useful starting map:

  • Instagram — visual businesses, lifestyle, local brands, anything that photographs well.
  • Facebook — local businesses and older audiences; still where community groups and events live.
  • LinkedIn — B2B, professional services, recruitment, and personal-brand thought leadership.
  • TikTok — reaching younger audiences and anything that suits short, personality-led video.
  • Pinterest — long-life visual content: interiors, recipes, weddings, e-commerce, design.
  • Google Business Profile — every local business, full stop; it's where people find you when they search.

Choose one or two, and commit

Pick the platform where your audience and your content overlap best, add a second if you can genuinely maintain it, and let the rest go. You can always expand later — it's far easier to add a third platform to a working system than to rescue five failing ones.

When you do expand

The reason being on several platforms is hard is the duplicated effort. Optimate lets you write once and schedule to every platform you're on from a single calendar — so adding a platform is a smaller decision than it used to be. Start free — 14-day Pro trial, no card.
