Content pillars: how to choose the themes your brand posts about
10 August 2026 · 5 min read
If posting to social media feels like starting from a blank page every single time, the problem usually isn't your creativity — it's that you have no structure to work within. Content pillars are that structure.
A pillar is a recurring theme you post about. Pick three to five, and 'what do I post today?' becomes the much easier 'which pillar is it today, and what's the specific angle?' Here's how to choose yours.
What makes a good pillar
A good pillar is broad enough that you'll never run out of angles, but specific enough to actually guide a post. 'Marketing' is too broad. 'One-minute marketing tips for café owners' is a pillar you could feed for years. Each pillar should serve your audience or your business — ideally both.
The four pillar types most brands can use
- Educational — tips, how-tos and answers to the questions your customers actually ask. This builds trust and is the most shareable.
- Behind-the-scenes — the people, the process, the day-to-day. This is what makes a brand feel human, and it's content only you can make.
- Social proof — reviews, results, customer wins, before-and-afters. This is what quietly moves people from following to buying.
- Promotional — your products, offers and launches. Necessary, but the smallest slice: if every post sells, people tune out.
How to choose yours
- 1List what your customers ask you before they buy — each recurring question is a pillar or a post.
- 2Add the parts of your business worth showing — the making, the team, the place.
- 3Include one social-proof pillar; you'll always have new wins to share.
- 4Keep exactly one promotional pillar, and hold it to roughly one post in five.
Map them onto your week
Once you have your pillars, assign them to your posting days. If you post three times a week, that might be educational on Monday, behind-the-scenes on Wednesday, social proof on Friday, with a promotional post working in every couple of weeks. Now your calendar has a shape, and each slot is a small, answerable question instead of a blank page.
