How to run a social media giveaway (the right way)
7 August 2026 · 6 min read
A giveaway is one of the fastest ways to get a burst of attention on social media. It's also one of the easiest to get wrong — run it carelessly and you'll attract a wave of prize-hunters who unfollow the moment it's over, leaving you with worse numbers than you started with.
Done well, though, a giveaway grows the right audience and gets your brand in front of people who'd never have found you. The difference is entirely in the setup.
Start with the prize — it decides everything
The prize is your filter. Give away a generic gadget and you'll attract everyone, most of whom will never buy from you. Give away your own product, or something only your ideal customer would want, and the people who enter are the people worth having. A smaller, on-brand prize beats a bigger, generic one every time.
Set entry rules that build something
Your entry mechanic should do work for you beyond the entry itself. Common ones, from lightest to most demanding:
- Follow + like — low friction, but the weakest signal of genuine interest.
- Tag a friend — extends reach to people who trust the tagger; two tags maximum, or it becomes spam.
- Share to a story — puts your brand in front of entirely new audiences.
- Comment with an answer — the best for engagement and for learning something about your audience.
Keep it legal
Giveaways are promotions, and they have rules. Include clear terms: who's eligible, the closing date, how the winner is picked and contacted. Each platform also has its own promotion rules — for example, you generally can't ask people to tag themselves in a photo they're not in. And you must state that the giveaway isn't sponsored by or associated with the platform. A few lines of terms protects you.
Plan the whole arc, not just the launch
A giveaway isn't one post. Tease it beforehand, announce it, remind people mid-way before entries stall, announce the winner publicly (it proves it was real), and — most importantly — have a plan for the new followers afterwards. The follow-up is where a giveaway either pays off or evaporates.
Have your next posts ready
The mistake that wastes a giveaway is going quiet the week after, just as your new audience is deciding whether to stay. Line up a strong run of normal content to publish straight after, so the people you just attracted immediately see why they should stick around.
