How to switch social media tools without losing your work

31 July 2026 · 5 min read

You've decided your current social media tool isn't right — too expensive as you've grown, missing the thing you actually need, or just not saving the time it promised. But switching feels risky: the scheduled queue, the connected accounts, the reporting history. Here's how to move without dropping anything.

What actually moves, and what doesn't

Set expectations first: most social tools don't import from each other. Your scheduled queue, saved drafts and past analytics generally don't transfer automatically. What you keep is everything on the platforms themselves — your posts, followers and history live on Facebook, Instagram and the rest, not in the tool. Losing the tool doesn't lose your accounts.

A clean switch, step by step

  1. 1Export what you can from the old tool — any content library, your posting schedule, and recent reports for your records.
  2. 2Note what's currently queued, so you can recreate the important scheduled posts in the new tool.
  3. 3Connect your accounts to the new tool and confirm each one posts correctly with a test.
  4. 4Rebuild your upcoming queue in the new tool before you cancel the old one.
  5. 5Only then cancel the old subscription — never before the new one is live and posting.

Overlap for a week — it's worth the double cost

The one mistake to avoid is cancelling the old tool the day you sign up for the new one. Run both for a week: set up the new tool properly, confirm it's publishing reliably, and rebuild your queue while the old one is still there as a safety net. A week of paying twice is far cheaper than a gap where nothing goes out.

Treat it as a chance to reset

A switch is a good moment to redo the foundations properly: set up your brand voice, tidy your content pillars, and reconnect only the accounts you actually use. You're rebuilding anyway — rebuild it better than the setup you're leaving.
