Your follower count

Rule of thumb only — benchmarks vary by platform, audience size and industry. Reach-based rates run higher than follower-based ones because not everyone sees every post.
How to calculate engagement rate
Engagement rate tells you what share of your audience actually interacts with a post — a far better signal of content quality than follower count alone. There are two common ways to work it out:
By followers
(Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100. The easiest to track over time and compare between accounts.
By reach
(Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100. More accurate for a single post — it only counts people who actually saw it.
Questions
How do you calculate engagement rate?+
Add up your engagements (likes, comments, shares and saves), divide by your follower count (or by reach), and multiply by 100. By followers: (engagements ÷ followers) × 100. By reach: (engagements ÷ reach) × 100.
Should I use followers or reach?+
By followers is the most common and easiest to compare over time. By reach is more accurate for how a single post actually performed, since it only counts people who saw it — so reach-based rates are usually higher.
What's a good engagement rate?+
It varies a lot by platform, audience size and industry, but as a rough rule of thumb under 1% is below the typical range, 1–3.5% is healthy, and above 3.5% is strong. Smaller accounts often see higher rates than large ones.
