Best AI social media tools

Almost every social tool now advertises AI, which makes the label useless on its own. What separates them is what the AI is grounded in and how much of it you get before you hit a credit wall. This list is ordered by that, not by overall product quality.

Who wrote this

Optimate publishes this page, so treat it as a vendor's list rather than an independent review. We've tried to earn the read by ranking on fit rather than on who's paying for the page — Optimate isn't first on every list here, and where a competitor is the better answer we say so and link you to them.

How this list is ordered

Ordered by the depth and practical volume of AI content generation specifically — not by how good the product is overall. A tool can be excellent and rank low here because its AI is a small side feature. Allowances quoted are from each vendor's published pricing.

Pricing checked 25 August 2026. Tools without a figure are ones we haven’t verified directly — check their site rather than trust a number we didn’t read ourselves.

  1. Number 1: Optimate

    Free plan · Pro £29/mo · Studio £59/mo · Agency £135/mo

Best for: AI content grounded in a saved brand kit

Optimate is built around the brand kit rather than a generate button: voice, audience, colours and rules are saved once, and captions and images are generated against them. Allowances are roughly 1,000 captions or 200 images a month on Pro. It ranks first on this particular list because AI generation is the product rather than a feature of it — on a general 'best social tool' list it would place lower, and does below.

  2. Number 2: SocialPilot

    From $20/mo (5 accounts)

Best for: The largest plain AI credit allowance of the mainstream schedulers

1,000 AI credits a month on Standard and 5,000 on Premium is genuinely generous — more headroom than most tools here. The assistant works per-prompt rather than from a saved brand voice, so consistency across posts is on you.

  3. Number 3: Metricool

    Free plan · from €20/mo

Best for: AI as an assist alongside strong analytics

The assistant is capable but rationed at 20–35 credits per brand per month, which suits occasional help rather than daily production. You're buying it for the analytics; the AI is a bonus.

  4. Number 4: Buffer

    Free plan · from $5/channel/mo

Best for: Light AI drafting on the cheapest plans

The AI Assistant drafts and repurposes posts and is included on every plan, free tier included. It's deliberately modest — useful for unsticking a caption, not for producing a month of content.

  5. Number 5: Sprout Social

    From $99/seat/mo billed annually

Best for: AI inside a full enterprise suite

100 AI agent credits per seat per month, wrapped in listening, a unified inbox and sentiment analysis. The AI isn't the reason to buy Sprout, and the per-seat price is hard to justify if it were.

  6. Number 6: Later

    From $25/mo (8 profiles)

Best for: Minimal AI — included, but tightly capped

5 AI credits a month on Starter and 100 on Scale. Later's strengths are visual planning and link-in-bio; if AI content is what you're shopping for, this is the wrong end of the list.

Common questions

What actually makes an AI social media tool good?

Two things, mostly. Grounding — whether the AI knows your brand voice without being told again every time — and allowance, meaning how much you can generate before hitting a credit limit. A tool with a brilliant model and 5 credits a month isn't useful for a business posting daily.

Can AI write social posts that don't sound like AI?

Only if it's working from something specific about you. Generic prompting produces generic output regardless of the model. Tools that save a brand voice, audience and rules and generate against them do measurably better, which is why grounding is the main axis this list is ordered on.

Is Optimate first here because you wrote the page?

It's first because this list is specifically about AI content generation, which is what Optimate is built around. On the small business and agency lists on this site it isn't first, because there other things matter more. If a ranking always came out in our favour it wouldn't be worth reading.
